RICHMOND, Va. – Chuck Slemp, former Chief Deputy Attorney General (AG) of Virginia, has joined Troutman Pepper Strategies as a strategic advisor.

Chuck brings a distinguished background in law and public service. As Chief Deputy Attorney General, he led the Virginia AG’s office, including overseeing the Department of Law and Division of Debt Collection. He managed a team of attorneys handling complex litigation and investigations, and directing the AG’s legislative affairs.

Prior to his time in the Virginia AG’s office, Chuck served six years as the commonwealth’s attorney of Wise County and the city of Norton in Virginia, leading the largest prosecutor’s office in southwestern Virginia, coordinating complex law-enforcement operations, and serving as the victim witness services director. His work included prosecuting serious crimes, drafting legislation, advocating before the General Assembly, and addressing the opioid crisis in central Appalachia.

Chuck also served as commissioner of accounts and general receiver, a quasi-judicial position responsible for Virginia’s probate court and the supervision of various fiduciaries. Before this, he operated his own law firm, focusing on wills and estate planning, juvenile advocacy, and criminal defense in state and federal court. He also served as town attorney for Pennington Gap, advising the town council and drafting ordinances.

In addition to his role as a strategic advisor, Chuck is also a valued member of our nationally recognized State Attorney General practice and regulatory team.
